PROJECT #WORLDCOLORS 2014, A RED FEBRUARY

RED

My #Worldcolors February "Red", is for Saga Seeds or "Love Seeds", the South East Asian version of a love heart.  After all we are in the month of love.
Saga Seeds are the bright red, hard, shiny seeds from the Saga Tree (Adenanthera pavonina).  Also known as "love seeds" due to the color and the almost heart shape of the seed.  Used for decorative purposes or fashioned into necklaces and bracelets and given as gifts as an expression of love, these seeds are really interesting. My love seeds occupy a Mango wood bowl and brighten up a corner of my apartment here in Singapore.  And yes, I LOVE THEM!

I first saw these seeds on a shopping trip to a Mall in Holland Village.

There is a fantastic store selling Mango wood products there, and I loved the way the seeds were used as decoration in the various shaped Mango wood bowls they had on display.  The color really made the Mango wood pop.

Although I bought mine, you can of course go hunting for the Saga Trees here in Singapore and gather them yourself.  The trees can be found in various places over the Island but remember, you must not eat the seeds as they are quite toxic when raw. Roasted seeds can apparently be shelled and eaten.  They are way too pretty for that in my opinion though, so pretty, they deserve to be photographed.

Which leads me to this.  On my recent trip back to the USA, I bought a small set of LIEQI camera lenses that clip over the camera lens on my I-phone.  Consisting of a Macro, Fish Eye and Wide Angled, I thought it would be fun to try some different shots and just play around a bit with my phone.  They were super cheap, obviously they are not going to give you super duper professional shots, but for $16 bucks, I thought I would give them a try.  Besides they are red - so, there is some method in my madness!
Check out some of my Love Seed shots using the new lenses.
